The Carter Plantation is an historical plantation house located on Louisiana highway 1038, southwest of Springfield in what is now Livingston Parish, Louisiana, United States. The property was purchased by Thomas Freeman in 1817, from James Rheem, who acquired it from a Spanish land grant in 1804. Freeman was the first African-American to own property in the Greensburg District in what became Livingston Parish, The plantation was completed in 1820, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places listings in Livingston Parish, Louisiana (NRHP) on February 23, 1979. == Early history == The land of the Carter Plantation was originally part of the Florida Parishes. Livingston, although the name is generally attributed to Edward.
